Why is the Australian Labradoodle different from the English and other Labradoodle Origins.

When Labradoodles were first bred they were simply a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle. Dogs with this breeding were typically bred to each other over future generations and were known as Multi-generation Labradoodles.

It was in the late 1980’s, when the Australian Labradoodle as we know it today was developed, breeders began carefully infusing several other breeds into the early generations of their Labradoodle Origins (Lab/Poodle crosses) to improve temperament, coat, confirmation and size. The infused breeds include the Irish Water Spaniel, American and English Cocker Spaniels. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other to continue the multi-generation tradition.

The Australian Labradoodles are wonderful, intelligent, intuitive dogs with fabulous coats that are more reliably non-shedding and allergy friendly than other types of Labradoodle such as the first generation Labradoodle Origin (Lab/Poodle crosses) or Labradoodle Origin backcrossed to a Poodle. Even when these Labradoodle Origin and Labradoodle Origin backcrosses have been bred for generations, they are not an Australian Labradoodle even if they are born in Australia, as the attributes of the infused breeds and focused breeding for the desired traits as envisioned by the founders, were not included in their ancestry.

Do not be fooled by imitations!

A Pure Australian Labradoodle is not just a cross between a Labrador & Poodle, otherwise known as an

F1 (Filial 1/ First Generation) or LO (Labradoodle Origin)
For an explanation of the various grades of Labradoodles please see my Labradoodle Grading Page.

A Pure Australian Labradoodle is a combination of several select breeds.

All chosen for specific reasons to create not only the perfect service dog for the physically challenged, but now, the perfect family companion.

A Labradoodle may be born in Australia BUT that does not make it an Australian Labradoodle!
